Although Gozo is the sister island of Malta, with a population of approximately 30,000 people, it has a character quite distinct from Malta's. Tourists spending their holiday in Malta will find that an excursion to Gozo is more than worthwhile. The beautiful, tranquil island of Gozo is only a 25 minute ferry ride from Malta. Gozo is also known as the place where time stood still and driving around the villages one will sense the peace and tranquillity of the island. The countryside is greener and more spectacular, with flat-topped hills characterizing the landscape, while the coast has rugged cliffs, penetrated by steep valleys and beautiful bays. The beautiful churches located in the centre of the villages and towns, show the influence of the Knights and names of villages are of Semitic origin. Gozitans known for their friendliness, have another culture and their own different lifestyles, customs, accent and dialect. The island of Comino situated between Malta and Gozo, is just 2 square kilometres in area. Having only a couple of residents living there, mainly farmers, Comino is a paradise! One can enoy the crystal clear blue waters known as Blue lagoon, caraway and the humming of the bees - the only sounds to be heard as no cars or other noisy activities disturb the peace. Comino is a haven for those who love swimming, snorkelling, surfing, diving and other water sports activities. There is a hotel on the island, a watch tower dating back to the 17th century and a small church built in 1618. |
